New face lift for my blog

Wow, I'm so pleased with the "Wintery" look of my blog.

I asked Patti H.. aka Other Patti (OP) if we could give my blog a new background. She does all my web work, actually Patti and her daughter Ruth. If you know me very well, you know I'm not techy, so I rely on those two ladies to do it for me.

They both have alot of patience. I keep calling with things I would like done, and have no idea how to do. Like changing my blogs appearance.

Thank you ladies, I really love the new look.

Mystery Stash Buster Class

Lola is having her second "Mystery Stash Buster" Class. When you sign up, you'll receive one of these cute little containers.


You take it home, follow the cutting instructions and put all the cut pieces in the box and bring it back to class. OK, it really doesn't get rid of much of your stash - but it's fun. Call the shop and sign up, we'll put a little box aside for you.

What little boy or maybe little girl wouldn't love to snuggle under their very own "Froggie" quilt?
And what makes it even better, it has coordinating flannel for the backing. With the weather the way it's been, the addition of flannel will make it twice as nice.

Lola pieced the top then brought it in for Patti H. ("Quilts from the Trail") to quilt. Look at the fun dragonflies she free handed all over the border. Just one of those little touches that makes it special.

Quilts Remembered

If you've been in the shop lately, you probably noticed that we expanded our Civil War section. We did this to showcase our newest quilts and these lovely runners, wall hangings and quilt on loan to Fabric Town by Annemarie Yohnk, designer of "Quilt Remembered".

Framed quilt is not part of the Quilts Remembered trunk show, it's called "Dipped in Chocolate" and was made by Sandy Delzer. The cute little quilt is part of the show and is called "Old Time Pinwheels".

For years we have made and displayed different quilts and runners from Annemaries patterns. If you're like us, you'll love them. She writes in a way that's easy to follow, has great diagrams and does not exaggerate the yardage required.

Designing and Creating

I'm home today, watching Quahog. He's recovering from his surgery so while sitting here I decided to try to design a new pincushion. This is what I came up with. I got the top done but somewhere between making the top and putting it together the whole plan changed.

Before I knew it, I was cutting out more flowers, adding stems and working on either a runner or a pillow.

Here's a close up of one of the flowers. The center will have a button in it - like the pincushion does.

This is not the best photo for color but this is the fabric that I want as my borders. If you could see it really close up you'd see that the gold of the applique background is in the print. I think when it's done it'll have an old feel to it. I do plan on adding some embroidery vines and who knows what else. For now this is a start.

I finally found a place to go for breakfast, sit and relax before my day gets rollin' - Valley Diner in Apple Valley. When you walk in Jacquie meets you with a great smile and a hot cup of coffee.

Then you see Tony. He's at the grill flippin' pancakes and cookin' up a storm.

On the walls are nostalgic posters of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Elvis. The walls are done in soft yellows and crisp blues. Here's a little sitting room where kids can play and Mom's can chat. The red faux suede couch is great

I loved the tile walls.. they give that diner feel. Your meal is served on Fiesta ware dishes that match the tiles.

If you feel like sitting and watching CNN in the morning, they have a big screen TV. Start your day off knowing all the happenings from around the world.

Bus to the Minnesota Quilter's Show

Fabric Town has chartered a coach to take you to and from the show.

On Thursday, June 14th, our bus departs Fabric Town at 9:00 AM.

You'll arrive at the Civic Center approximately 10:30. Spend the entire day enjoying the wonderful quilts and vendors, then get back on the bus at 4:00 PM. We'll have you home by 5:30.

Upon boarding the bus, you'll receive a $10 gift certificate to Fabric Town, and a treat bag.

New, fun fabrics arrived this morning.

A fun new line arrived this morning. When we ordered it we had a plan. "Fire Escape" by Atkinson Designs.

The soft teal against the lily pad green gives a great contrast. Add just a touch of metallic and you get just a bit of sparkle.

Gotta love Dimples. From a distance they appear solid or slightly mottled.

Close up you can see the texture and pattern. I love these for blenders. I'd like every color in all the shades.


I fell in love with this colorway. Fall is my favorite season and nothing says it like a rich rusty orange

and a gold and orange combination.

When I look at these I can picture a fall bag or tote. Stipple down the background of the large print and watch the design really pop. Tomorrow I'll have to find a new pattern. What I really need is more time, so many ideas, and never enough time.

When I took all the pictures at our retreat for my blog... I didn't realize at the time that some of the ladies were not in the room.

I apologize to Julie, Shelley, Judy, Joan and Jessie. I think some were at dinner and I know that one was taking a nap. This was not intentional.

Diane is working on the cutest 1930's pinwheel quilt.

Today is our last day. It's amazing how many quilts, toppers, runners, tote bags and even one little dog jacket were made. We laughed, and sewed from early AM til after the witching hour.
Why is it that the work week seems to drag so slowly, but when you go on a retreat the time flies by so fast?

Here are a few photos of the ladies in action. Some are gone for naps, or were in their rooms reading etc. That's the nicest thing about this retreat. It's not a structured one, it has nothing to do with the shop... it's just ladies enjoying each others company and taking some time to relax.

Break time for Sandy D. Her project is Among Friends in Civil War prints.

Patti H. (Other Patti) brought 15 bags with UFO's in them. Her mission was to get as many complete as possible. Some just needed borders. Some the blocks were made and had to be put together. Runners needed binding. On the last count, she had 9 projects done and ready to be quilted. The empty chair a cross from her is mine. I did manage to get alot done.

Theresa finished up a quilt, stippled two toppers and was starting on another project.

This is Jessica. She's our "Soon to be Mom". Baby June is due in April and we're all excited. Jessica spent most of her time making crib sheets and things for the new arrival.

Here's just one of the quilt projects that Patti H. got finished. Yellow Brick Road, nice choice for that line of fabrics.


Theresa is finishing up "Pieces in Time" by Perkins Dry Goods. This was a quilt that we tested for Celine.. Theresa liked it so much she made two. Once she gets the border on it's ready to head for the quilter.

A fun surprise in the Morning

For about two weeks I have been working on a little surprise for all the ladies on our retreat. There were suppose to be 22 attending, so I had to really kick it in gear. I managed to get them all done and a couple extra just incase I needed them.

This morning they all woke to find a wool scissors keeper with stork scissor, on the bed of their sewing machine.

Just a nice way to start the day.

Sit and Stitch

We've been asked if we ever let people come in and use our class section to do handwork - embroidery, binding etc. The answer has always been yes, if the class tables were not being used.

On Monday Jeff and I finally got the hutch and table moved into our new section. When it's finished, it'll be a nice little area that can be reserved for some quiet stitching.

You can come alone or with friends. The table opens wider and can comfortably seat 8. Spend an hour or the whole day. Relax and enjoy yourself. We'll even have coffee and tea.

The photo is just the start, we've got more to do, for one thing - Jeff forget the chairs so those are coming Sunday.

New Civil War Fabrics arrived

Scott our UPS man brought us a lot of boxes on Thursday night. We got them opened up and guess what? 30 new bolts of Civil War prints. Some are Jo Morton, some Blue Hill and a few Winston.

Deep dark reds, rich blues, golds, several greens and warm chocolate browns.

Time to get in touch with Lola, I have a sample in mind.

New Year Wishes

My wish for everyone in 2012 is health and happiness.

We have all struggled with this unstable economy. Predictions are that this is the year it finally turns around and lives will be returned to normal.

Instead of looking at what we don't have or have lost, it's time to look at what we have and be thankful. A positive attitude goes along way.

Quilters are lucky people. Our craft is one of warmth and love. When you give the gift of a quilt, you wrap your loved ones or friends with a gift from the heart. It's amazing the healing powers of a quilt.

I hope to see you all in the New Year. As always, I appreciate your constant support of Fabric Town and friendship.

Heartwarming and up lifting

When you turn on the news each night, you hear all the bad things that happened that day. Some days there isn't even one story that would be considered heartwarming or up lifting.

Well, this is that heartwarming, up lifting story. I received a message last week from Cindy Wilson, a long time friend and quilter. She wanted to know if Fabric Town collected pillow cases for "ConKerr Cancer". She had a box of cases her Mother , Pauline Tyrrell, had made to donate. I responded that we did and would be glad to take the box and contact them for pickup.

The photo you are looking at is what was in the box...100 pillow cases. There are ones made in fairy fabric, trucks, robots, angels and many, many more. All washed and pressed ready to be given to a child fighting to over come Cancer.

I got a message back to Cindy, wanting to know if I could put her Mothers name and a little bit about her on our blog. This is what Cindy told me about her Mom.

Pauline has been making pillow cases for over a year now. She has already made 200 and has 70 more cut out and ready to sew. She enjoys going to quilt shops to pick out fabrics to make the cases. Her partner Perry makes it a team effort, he enjoys picking out the fabric for the boys cases. Then they work together to pick out the trim and cuffs.

With the economy in such a state and all the nastiness you hear about on the news, it's nice to know that there are still people like Pauline and Perry out there. Knowing that Pauline's cases will help make 100 children smile is what I call a heartwarming, up lifting story.

Thank you Pauline, your generosity and efforts are appreciated by every family your pillow cases touch.

Make it take it Day.

I have been working on a few ideas for quick, inexpensive classes to help pass the blustery days of winter.

Here's a question for you... would you be interested in a "Make it Take it" class? That would be a project that you would be able to completely finish in 3 - 4 hours. It would be a small wool project, you'd have two options to chose from.

I always enjoyed doing Make it Take it's. I like the chance to make something that I could get done in an afternoon, and it was usually something I would not normally do.

I've been working on a special - surprise project for a retreat I'm going on, each of the attendees will receive one. Several have seen them and asked if I would teach them to make one. It's a great introduction to wool, fast and very pretty. After my retreat, when all have gotten their surprise I will post the photo of them.

I'm thinking of having the class on a Sunday afternoon and then again on a day during the week. What would work best for you? The fee would be minimal, just for the supplies. The project I have in mind would be approximately $9.95 and that would include Coffee and Tea while you create.

I would appreciate your input...

Christmas plans are made..

Tonight is Christmas Eve. I'm hoping everyone's ready and can spend the next few days enjoying time with family and friends.

For the first time in years Jeff and I are going to his brothers house for Christmas Eve. We usually have to stay around here. My Mother's in a nursing home and I can't go away on a Holiday with a clear conscience  and leave her alone. She says it doesn't matter to her, she'll watch TV. That's not my idea of celebrating Christmas. So, today I'll go over and visit her in the morning. My sister will come in the afternoon and open gifts with her and spend a little time.

 Tomorrow, Christmas Day, I'll go back to open the gifts Jeff and I purchased for her.  I'll watch a little television with her, I'm sure there's a John Wayne marathon on... next to my father that was the love of her life. So needless to say, she never misses any of the marathons. 

Jeff is heading up North to his Mothers, the family is having a dinner and it sounds like almost all are coming. It's a 3 hour drive to their house and I am not able at this time to drive that long. It's been quite awhile since I have gotten together with all his sisters and brother. He has the most fantastic family, I lucked out in the In-Laws department.I love spending time with them all. 

Until Jeff comes home, Quahog and I have a plan for our night. After I leave my Mothers, we're going to finish up a little sample I've been working on for the shop and then watch a little TV ourselves. (for the record - NOT John Wayne)

Well, that's the plan for my holiday. I hope everyone has a peaceful and relaxing time. If you're traveling, be safe.

Floral Block-of-the-Month.... almost ready.

This is my new Block-of-the-Month that will be starting on January 15th. "Amy's Sampler" by Brandwine Designs.

I've wanted to do this quilt for 2 years. I even went as far as to pick out all the fabrics and put them along with the pattern in a hutch at the shop.... planning on doing it as soon as I got the time.

Well.... here it is !!! I've got the blanket stitching done (by hand) on all but two of my blocks. I'm not much on doing alot of handwork. It's pretty well known that Becky does all my binding. For some reason, I truly enjoy this kind.

One of the things you can't really see in the pictures, I did a little embellishing with glass beads on some of the flowers. It just gave a little sparkle to the blocks.

Tomorrow I hope to get my pieced blocks done. Then I can finish up the stitching on the last two blocks and bring it into the shop.

This block and the hedgehog block below are my last two to stitch. Isn't the hedgehog adorable. I think it's one of the reasons I wanted to do this... I have always wanted to have a pet hedgehog but if you know anything about Boston Terriers... absolutely NO rodent kind of animals in the house. So this is as close as I'm going to come.

If you shy away from applique, this is the perfect project to start with. I really think you'll enjoy it. We will be taking sign-ups January 1st, we have a limited supply of kits so don't wait too long to reserve yours.

Resting & Recouping at home with Riley Blake

Been waiting til I felt up to sitting for a longer period to sew. Today was the day. I got the cutting board and my featherweight out and decided to give it a go.

When we got in this line "Daisy Cottage" by Riley Blake and I just fell in love with it. There were several different patterns we could use but one kept sticking in my head.

When Shelley was here from "Pieced Tree Patterns" she had a sample made up of this pattern and it was really nice. "Roll Play" is designed for Jelly Rolls - or basically 2 1/2" strips.

I got my strips cut and started.... before I knew it, I had 22 blocks done. Riley Blakes jelly rolls are only 22 strips vs Moda's which have 42. So, I have to go get another one at the shop before I can finish it. With two rolls, it will be 48" x 60" - without borders. Once I get it put together I'll decide if I want to border it, I'm generally a Border lover. I think it just finishes the quilt. Once it's done, I'll post a photo of it. I think it's going to have that "Groovy" feel. Oh boy... I just dated myself.

Holiday Wishes

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and a time for all of us to give thanks and express appreciation for what we have.

With 2012 approaching, it's hard for me to believe that I have owned Fabric Town for 4 years. The time has really flown. It may not be said as often as it should, but I appreciate your constant support of the shop as well as your encouragement. You make it all worthwhile and fun. For that I am extremely thankful.

May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season.

Surgery has its advantages.

I would like to start off by saying that my intent was not to put my medical information on Facebook or blog about it...but it did manage to get out there so, yes I had surgery and I'm doing very well.

When you're feeling bad, there's nothing that can help like the sight of a Bachmans purple and white box - with your name on it.

Most of you don't know it, but the Christmas Cactus, Poinsettia and Hydrangea are my favorite flowers...but by far it's the Christmas Cactus. This was such a wonderful gift from my girls. For the past 4 years they have watched me try to grow a "Blooming" Christmas Cactus. It's alive but the word Blooming....not so much. I get 1 bloom per season and last time if fell off an laid on the carpet all wilted.

Well check out these blooms ... hundreds of tiny little pink buds. It's totally covered and lush.

I have an instruction sheet on how to care for it.... the first thing will be to get it back to the shop. The light at my apartment is not good enough. Who knows, maybe this one can show my old one how to bloom.

Thank you so much Ladies for the thoughtful gift and for taking care of the shop while I'm recovering. I appreciate it and you more than you realize.

Remodeling underway.

For some time now I've been saying "we're going to re-do our class area". Well, we started last week. My plan is to make it more private - yet keep it open so that customers can come to the notions wall. The first thing we're doing, is taking the fabric out of the class section. We've emptied the shelves and have them off the walls.

If all goes as planned, we'll have slat wall put up today where the shelves were. That will allow us to display class samples opened up so they can be seen better. plus have the option of putting the kits on small wall shelves with the samples and patterns. Basically, make it easier for our customers to find everything they need to make the quilt without having to hunt for things. Space has been made for a flannel board to be put up that's permanent and lastly, replace the carpet.

The shelves we took off the wall (seen here empty) will be put together in a section 3 in a row/back to back to form a dividing wall. Since we do alot of kitting in the back part of the shop I don't want to completely block the view to the front. On the other side of the room we will be bringing in a hutch with a table and chairs. We have alot of ladies that like to do handwork and this will give them a quiet place to come, sit and relax. Eventually we will have coffee and cookies available.

So, there's alot of work to be done. If you stop in and the back looks a little strange - that's why. It may take a little longer to get it done than I planned but we're finally moving ahead. Lets hope that Jim who's doing the slat wall arrives today. He got tied up last weekend so the shop looked torn apart all week. Once he gets his part completed we can go get the Hutch and table out of our storage locker.

I will be glad when it's finally finished. This is all going to take time, but I think it'll make a big difference in keeping classes a little more private.

Another AM on my deck... in November!!

November 12th, 7:30 AM. The sun is shining on my deck and I'm taking full advantage of it.


It's a little crisp out here but nothing like it should be. As long as I'm wrapped up, it's quite nice.

The only change I had to make was to my coffee cup. Usually it's my favorite china cup, but with it so cool out - my coffee became cold quickly. Time to breakout the thermal... in more ways than one.

My project this morning is a flower pincushion in wool. You can't really tell from my pictures but it's in a tart tin. This one's almost done, just have to finish up the last petal and add the embellishments.

I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful fall weather...

Gobble Gobble.... getting ready for my favorite Holiday.

Today, Quahog and I worked on making a Thanksgiving Turkey towel. I can honestly say that he left the floss alone and just rested by my side.

I love Thanksgiving, it's always been my favorite holiday. Christmas is nice but the feeling for me that I get at Thanksgiving is one of warmth and family. My favorite meal is the traditional Thanksgiving fare... Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, rolls, cranberry sauce and cider. The way the pilgrims meant it to be. (And to my sister....the pilgrims did NOT put rasins in the stuffing)

Any way, are you getting ready for Thanksgiving? Do you have any traditions that you'd like to share. We'd love to hear them.

Lola's unbelilvable quilt sale

What do you do with 300+ quilts, table runners, toppers, tree skirts, pillows, totes and purses? You sign up for the Canterbury Autumn Festival and fill a booth to the rafters.

Lola makes alot of samples for our shop plus she has her own pattern line, so you'd expect her to have quite a few quilts etc. That was an understatement and I was in no way prepared for the amount she had in her van. We turned an 8" x 11" booth into a one woman quilt show and sale. These are the before and after pictures of her booth.

I am still amazed at how we managed to get it all in. The hanging racks made it easy to display alot of them but the tables are still stacked 8 - 10 deep. From quilts for kids to seasonal and bed quilts - she has them all. She is one very talented lady.

I know she'll do well at the show, she has something for everyone. If you're looking for a great show, head to Canterbury this weekend and check it out. Lola is in booth 423.

Spring Block-of-the-Month starting soon.

We're all still enjoying the wonderfully mild fall days, but we all know what's just around the corner. I'm going to head off those Winter blues by starting to work on our new "Spring" Block-of-the-Month.

I have been wanting to do this pattern for some time. Awhile ago, I started collecting fabrics in all the shades of my favorite flowers. After getting the last three that I was looking for, I'm finally ready to get started.

Our new class schedule comes out in December and we will be starting all classes and clubs in January. This BOM isn't a year long, it's only 6 months. The first months kit will be available on January 1st.

I'm not going to show you what it looks like yet.... give me a little time to get a few blocks finished up and then I'll reveal it. It's sure to help you keep those winter blues from getting a grip on you.

"Cranberries & Calico Primitives" new pattern

I just finished my sample for the shop of "Cranberries & Calico Primitives" new pattern "Warm and Wooly Mitten". It's a cotton lined wool mitten. Appliqued then blanket stitched together. If you want to give it the well worn feel, pick the cotton between the stitches so that it shows. Hard to see it in this photo, but up close it looks old.

I went out in my yard and snipped the pine branches and pine cones to stuff it with. When I get to the shop I have some red berries to put in as well. The best part of using real pine is the scent. Right now my entire kitchen smells like a Christmas Tree Lot. In my opinion, that's one of the best scents of the Holiday season.

Lots of possibilities with this mitten. I don't know if I should stitch a ribbon onto one corner and hang it from a doorknob or set it in my bathroom in a basket with rolled towels. I may just make several and put them in the wire basket in the photo. I guess this is one of those patterns that you can embellish lots of different ways to make it fun.

I have to admit, I'm a little behind with my block-of-the-month. The good part is that everyone that's doing it... is too. I appreciate that they say to take my time, Thanks ladies.

I'm doing most of the applique with blanket stitch - by hand, so it takes me a little longer. This is my final block, it's time to assemble the entire top. I have about 7/8 of it already done, just have to add the last 3 blocks and the filler pieces. I'm really excited about he way it is coming together. For me this is over the top... I usually stick to the more "log cabin" style or venture out there and do a "nine patch". I like to stay in the safe zone. Well, this was so much fun and I've always enjoyed fusible applique.

The pattern calls for applique on the border. For mine,I chose not to put the appliques on, I felt it was too busy. My inner border is dark green. I think it'll frame it nicely. Then the outer border is a red tone on tone dotted print.

Patti H.(Quilts from the Trail) is waiting for me to get it done so she can quilt it. Knowing her, she has something special in mind. I'm always excited to see what she comes up with.

Fun Gift Idea

This may be my last morning sitting on my deck. It's getting down right frosty out here. I'm wrapped in a quilt and am snuggly, but it won't be long before I'll have to remove snow to sit here. UGH. I really enjoy doing hand work out here... where there's a will there's a way. We'll see what I can come up with.

This mornings project - Do you have a person on your Holiday gift list that's hard to buy for? I think we all do. This may be your answer to that problem. Quick, easy and inexpensive to make. This is a tea towel pattern by "The Wooden Bear". I started it when the Vikings game started and had it done by the time the game was over ('cept for the buttons which I'm doing while I drink my coffee)

Who doesn't love cute little snowball faces? I did mine on a navy and tan towel. I think they'd be just as cute on red and tan. Well, there you have it, a quick gift or fun accessory for your own home. I was just thinking, if you have a child or children that would like to make a gift for someone - this would be easy enough to do. What a great surprise for Grandma or even a favorite teacher... a handmade tea towel.

I have a friend that I don't see very often but is very special to me, her name is Georgia. We met back in 1968 when we both moved to Burnsville. We lived across the street from each other. A friendship started back then and remains today. The two of us have been through thick and thin and even thinner!!! We've cut each others hair, TP'd the neighbors, made prank phone calls, babysat together and skipped school, (the stories about the notes we wrote for the absence is a scream) and we were in each others weddings, I think you get the picture.

Last week she stopped in the shop and brought me this wonderful tea set. It's a well know fact that I love Lamps, old wooden chairs and tea cups. Almost every morning in the spring, summer and fall I sit on my deck and enjoy coffee and tea - in a nice china cup. This was a wonderful present. It's getting a little cold out so I was afraid I wouldn't be able to use it on the deck before the snow. Well, this morning I got up, made the coffee and grabbed a quilt. I drank my coffee on the deck from this lovely dragonfly cup.

The detail on the handle of the dragonfly is so sweet. I love the tiny spoon with the leaf handle and the dainty tray to set it on. It was perfect. I was so wrapped up in the quilt, it was refreshing and so quiet.

Women of the West Show

Yesterday was the Women of the West show. Just a few photos of our booth.

We had alot of fun. Met the two wonderful ladies that own "Sweetwater Quilt Shop". They were great to talk with and I'm looking forward to taking a little road trip to see their shop. Next to our booth was Kathy and Lois from "Calla Lily Quilt Shop". Kathy's in the Twin Cities Shop Hop with us so I get to talk with her often. It was fun to be able to spend a little time with her.

Below is the great Waffle Time Halloween table runner Theresa made. What a surprise when Terry Atkinson (Atkinson Designs) stopped by our booth and got a chance to see what we did with her pattern. Nice to see her, it's been a while.

Our snowman quilt was a hit again. We are just about out of the kits... just a great little quilt to throw over a chair or hang on a wall for the season. In Minnesota, you could leave a snowman quilt out 'til May (ha ha).

Thank you to the Women of the West Guild for a great show. Special thanks to Donna Champion and I hope to see you at the shop one of these days.

Volunteer Tables

Do you need a cutting table? Are you looking for a nice work space that won't take up too much room? What I was looking for - a table where I would have an area for up my cutting mat next to my machine and a bonus would be to have a little space for an iron. I found my solution, the "Volunteer Table". It's a portable table that as you can see from the photo is very compact. I'ts approximately 3" deep when take apart.(all the legs and pieces are stored inside) Easy to store...which is important to me, I'm limited in storage at our apt.

Perfect height for cutting 36" and can be lowered down to 29" with a flip of the base. Has two sturdy shelves for great storage. The larger one, also has two heights but the best part is the fact that you can comfortably sit and sew at it. I was hooked the minute I sat down at it. I liked the nice finish, the color and the fact that it was light enough for me to flip it, if I wanted it higher.

Jeff S. the designer will be coming to the shop in November to demonstrate the table. In the meantime, we have the smaller version set up to show you and I do have one in stock for sale. This table just might be the answer to your quilting, cutting and crafting needs.

Theresa must have been working 'round the clock to get these fun Halloween and Christmas projects done. I love the pillow, "It's all about the boots" by Oh My Bloomin Threads. Check out the feather trim, what a great idea. Her embroidery stitches are unbelievable, you have to see them to appreciate the workmanship.

One of our all time favorite runners is the "Waffle Time" table runner by Atkinson Designs. I think Theresa has done it in at least a half dozen different fabric combinations and all have been winners. Next to "Lucky Stars", "Waffle Time" is my favorite of all Terry's patterns.

Love this pattern. When you have a border and aren't sure what to do with it... here's your answer. All you need is a 60 degree ruler and 1 1/4 yds of border print. I'm a snowman person so this one would look great on my table.

We are doing the "Women of the West" show on Saturday, October 15th so all these fun samples will be a the show. They should be back in the shop on Monday. If you'd like us to hold a kit for you, give us a call. (952) 432-1827

Just working on the last 3 blocks of my "Comfort and Joy" Block of the Month.Still have a few more of the filler parts and then the borders to put on.

This has been so much fun to work on. If you've always wanted to give applique

a try, this is the easiest kind. All the pieces are fused on and then I either blanket stitched them by hand or did machine satin stitch. If you like to needle turn, this would be wonderful to do. Either method you choose, it would look great.

This morning I wanted to lay it out and see how it was looking. With all the floor space available... look who has to sit on my project. The minute I layed it out, he strolled over and sat down. Before I knew it he had made himself very comfortable.

If you'd like to make a "Comfort & Joy" quilt for yourself, there are still a few kits available at the shop. But please note, Naughty little Boston Terrier not included in kits.

Sitting on my deck having a cup of coffee and watching the sun rise. Hard to believe it's already October 9th and I'm out here with a light sweatshirt on and no shoes.

The leaves are falling as I sit here. It's kind of a calm feeling. Very quiet this morning, I can hear birds lightly chirping and a dog barking in the distance. I enjoy sitting here and watching the day dawn.

Fabulous Fall Friday.

I know I've said it before but, I love fall. I slept last night with the deck door open and the breeze coming through the door was wonderful. The sound of the leaves rustling in the trees just lulled you to sleep.

Yesterday, Qua and I sat out in the courtyard for a while. He played with his toy and rolled in the leaves. Fun to watch him have so much fun. I can remember as a child, raking up the leaves into a huge pile and then jumping in them. Something about the sounds and smells or them that takes me back to those days.

After I get done at the shop today, I'm going to Pahl's market to pickup a few pumpkins and mums for my deck. I've had my fall log cabin quilt on the table for a few weeks now but haven't had time to finish up my decorations. I spend a lot of time doing work or relaxing on the deck so I like having it decorated for the seasons. If it's nice out tomorrow, I plan on setting my sewing machine up on the table and working on a few projects.

The sad part of Fall is that Winter is just around the corner. But, when the weather turns cold and blustery we all start quilting. We have some great new projects to help get you through the up coming months. Stop in the shop and let us help you pick out a new project.

November is Birthday Buddies Month at FT

November is "Birthday Buddies" month at Fabric Town.

Most of our customers already know what Birthday Buddies is and how important it is to me.

For those who are unfamiliar with it, I'll give you a brief description and the address of our website so you can check it out.

Birthday Buddies is a non-profit 501C organization that was started by my sister Nancy and I several years ago. In our family your birthday was a special day in fact, it usually lasted a full week. It's a day that's all about you, it makes you feel important and it helps to build self esteem.With the economy in a decline and many families experiencing financial hardships.... birthday parties fall pretty low on the list of priorities. Our mission is to make sure that every child has a birthday with cake, toys and memories.

We service Dakota, Hennepin, Anoka, Scott and Ramsey counties. We work through School Counselors, Social Services and many other County Agencies. When a request comes in, Nancy custom makes the bag according to individual needs. Each bag contains approx. $30 worth of items. There is a cake mix and frosting, candles, plates, napkins, Main toy, coloring books, crayons, books, socks and a toothbrush and tooth paste, tissue paper and a birthday gift bag, all these items are placed in a large plain bag so the parents can get them in the house undetected. Depending on the season, the bags can contain knit hats and gloves.

Through the year, we do whatever is possible to collect the needed items. One of our customers, Jill Harms, has been making small doll quilts for us since our inception. Alot of little girls will enjoy those for years to come. Along with Fabric Town, there have also been toy drives at Bear Patch Quilt Shop in White Bear Lake and Monique's School of Dance in Apple Valley.

We're going into our slowest time for donations. I realize that many of you give to organizations collecting toys for Christmas... what about the Birthday's that fall in Nov. & Dec? We could really use your help.

November 1st, we will be collecting TOYS, cake mixes/frostings, birthday plates and napkins. You can drop them off at the Fabric Town or if you live by Bear Patch, stop in and give them to one of the ladies, they'll let me know. As a Thank You, your name will go in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Fabric Town. will have the drawing on December 1stl

How do you buy fabric?

When you go to the quilt shop, do you go with a plan? Is there a specific pattern you have in mind or are you just looking in general?

One of our customers, Sharron Grocott, was in the shop the other day and was looking at some of our newest Holiday Fabric. She loved the prints and we got to chatting about "Buying on Speculation".

Sharron explained to me how she purchases fabrics. If she sees a line of fabric that she likes and doesn't have an actual pattern or plan, she buys on speculation. She starts with the main print and depending on the type of fabric she will purchase between 3 - 5 yards. From there she collected the accent fabrics and said that she usually bought 1 - 2 yards of each. That gives her ample for most patterns.

I was always told that a good rule of thumb was, when in doubt, get 3 yards. This amount will allow for outer borders and some for the piecing. Sharron just confirmed that rule.

So the next time you're at your local quilt shop and see a fabulous line - but have no plan, think of Sharron. That will ensure that you have enough of that special fabric to complete your project.

Resting after a long trip - planning the next.

Heide and I got our booth packed up, loaded and were on the road home by 6:18. We made it in 4 hours. I was home and in bed by 11:30. This old body was exhausted.

I want to say a very Sincere Thank you to Heide for a wonderful time. She is so much fun to travel with. I think we laughed most of the time, which made the time go alot faster. Her sense of humor has been a life savor when needed this past few months.

A large Thank you goes to Becky and Theresa for keeping the home fires burning while we were away. I have a great group of ladies and I never hesitate to leave the shop in their hands. They have never let me down and are always willing to go the extra mile to make things easier for me. I appreciate them more than they realize. We're a team, working for the same goal.

Our next show is on the 15th of October. We're doing the Women of the West Quilt Guild show.

It's being held at the Plymouth Creek Center (14800 34th Ave. North, Plymouth MN 55447). Its just a one day show from 9am til 5pm. We did their last one and it was really nice. Hope to see you there.

From there, we go to the Prior Lake Guild Meeting. Our theme for this meeting is Kit Bonanza. They have asked us to bring kits for all kinds of things. We have some really nice holiday runners and toppers that a few of the members saw at the shop and wanted us to be sure to bring. We truly enjoy doing their meetings - they are a fun group.

A few of the Magnificent Works of Art at the show.

This quilt was the winner of "Best of Show". I can't begin to desribe it to you. The fabrics are hand dyed, there were various types of fabric used - such as velvet. She did all the quilting herself in gold metallic. It was unbelievable.

Heide snapped a few photos of some of the quilts before thr cameras battery died. Here are just a few of the fabulous quilts.

I've been to many quilt shows and I have never seen such quilting. These quilts were from all over the country. The applique was unbelievable, the tiny piecing was amazing.

I've never considered myself a good sewer or quilter... I just enjoy it for fun. If you want to feel a little inadequate, this is the place. I can't imagine how you even start to plan a quilt like these. Not only the piecing but the quilting. The time it took to make these quilts was worth every minute.

This is a close up of one of the blocks from the postage stamp quilt below. The squares were approx 3/4". It was wonderful, hand quilted with perfectly spaced stitches.

I guess I'm more of a traditional quilter. I admire the work in the "Artsy" quilts but I'm drawn to the more original ones. This postage stamp was one of my favorites, it didn't win a ribbon but I gave it a two thumbs up.

Today was day three of the show. We were fairly busy all day. One of my favorite things about doing a few shows per year... seeing friends. This is Shelly and her husband Dan. Two of the nicest people you could ever know.

Shelley is the owner of The Quilted Forest Quilt Shop in Forest City, IA. and the designer of the "Pieced Tree Patterns"... those little laminated cards you see all over our shop (and most shops). Her booth was just a few aisles over from us. Really creative quilts and displays. Lots of bright inviting kits to choose from.

Another wonderful, fun person is Shelley's sidekick - Sue Ann. She's doing a demo on the Go Baby by Accucut.

Then down the line was another friends booth, Karen from "Seams to Me". I met Karen about 19 years ago when Barb and I went to Quilt Market in Houston and then would see her when we did the Des Moines Guild show at the fair grounds. Funny how the years have flown and how you can just chat like you saw each other a week ago.

Another familiar face a the show, Gruber's Quilt Shop. Sue and Theresa were there demo'ing and selling kits and notions.

Sue's a fun lady and has one of the most well known Quilt Shops in Minnesota. I don't get to see her that often but it's always nice.


Country Threads was there. It's been years since I've seen Connie and Mary. Their booth was full of fun halloween stuff, lots of wool and punch needle. Kinda made me think of getting in more of the punch needle supplies.


It was good to see some old friends, I made a few new ones and I look forward to seeing them again. We already told AQS that Heide and I will be back next October. The two of us are really looking forward to it.

Day one of the show.

Sorry no photo's today. I left the camera in the hotel room.

It was a good day. We saw alot of old friends from when Barb and I use to do the DSM show. We were pretty busy most of the day.

Went to dinner at Skips - excellent food, nice atmosphere. Now we're back in the hotel room getting in our PJ's and ready to watch a little TV. I think we're both pretty tired, need our beauty rest to be ready for tomorrow (no comments necessary on the beauty thing). I will post some photos tomorrow... I promise.

I'm in love with "Seed"

When our booth was set up, Heide and I went to grab a quick bite and check out some shops. We came upon "Seed", the cutest garden shop I've ever been to.


From the minute you walk up on the sidewalk, til you enter and see the finch in the cage playing - it's engrossing. The succulents, fig trees, water globes and vintage planters are all wonderfully displayed.


There's pumpkins in a wheelbarrow, rusty metal headboards as trellises and lots of old "stuff" turned into planters and gardens.

This was a metal sunflower attached to a beaded vine. I am a bead lover so it was one of my favorite things.

This metal chair was planted with an ornamental cabbage, yellow peppers, succulents and pansies. A combination that would never cross my mind, but made the perfect statement.


We could have spent hours looking at everything in the shop, but it was closing time. Maybe next year... we'll allow more time. If you're in the Des Moines area, stop at "Seed" and check it out, you won't be disappointed.

The Booth Set Up.

Heide and I got to the Event Center and started working on our set up. Usually we have a double booth, this time I went with a single... never again. It's hard to put 10 lbs of stuff in a 2 lb. bag!!!

What a mess. We set it up, took it down, shifted it, moved the quilts to different location and finally found the right order.


Finally done and not that bad. The show starts tomorrow at 9:00 AM, we're ready.

Brought my "Celery Featherweight" to sell. I saw alot of booths selling the black ones, but none had this model. If you're in the market for one, email me ASAP before it's gone.

Iowa here we come.

On the road heading to Iowa... Heide is doing the navigating. She googled our destinations.

Do I look concerned? Are we heading South? Last time we traveled together we took the long way to Bemidji. I don't want to see the Canadian flag before I see the Iowa border.

We did stop in Forest City at "The Quilted Forest", we just forgot the camera in the truck and it was raining so we didn't go out to get it. Our visit with Shelley was fun as always. She was packing for the show, so we'll see her again. From there we went to Jewel. A cute little town that Debbie Bowles the designer of Maple Island Quilt patterns is from. Heide and Debbie are good friends so we stopped at her home town. After checking out the little quilt shop, Prairie Rose, we were told by the owner that they had homemade apple crisp at her restaurant. That sounded good to us so we went to "Mischells" Food and Spirits and had a piece. It was delicious and the atmosphere very quaint.

When we were heading out of Jewel, Heide spotted this Body Shop. She wanted to stop in and get a little work done. Evidently, she thought this was some kind of small town spa. I waited in the truck. When she came out with a puzzled look on her face she asked... "do my fenders still look wide to you"? Graciously, I replied "You look Maahhvelous". From there we got back on the road and headed to Des Moines to our hotel.

Yes, it looks pretty bare in spots. I can hear the rumors starting already. No, we are not closing. All the wonderful samples are going to the AQS show in Des Moines.

I posted a few signs around explaining where the quilts and other samples were.


Loaded and ready to head out. I pick up Heide at 10:00 AM. Our first stop is to see Shelly at The Quilted Forest in Forest City, IA. It's been years since I've been there and now she has a new location. Then if possible I want to swing into Country Threads and see Mary and Connie. Couple of really super ladies. I remember when Barb and I use to visit them, that was a long time ago. After that, who knows were we'll go.... It's an adventure every time Heide and I travel together. (lets just say, Heide excels at everything she does...except navigate). I hope to see you at the show.

Quilt Sewcial X -- September 24, 2011

Our 10th Quilt Sewcial is over. As always, we had a fantastic group of ladies attend. Patti H took these wonderful photo's to share with everyone. This is the with all the special pumpkins that I've been working on for the guests.

This lovely fall centerpiece was one of the prizes we drew for. Judy L. won the drawing. I hope you enjoy it Judy, for years to come.

I madae 35 "Orange" pumpkins but for Judy K, I made a special one - "Purple". It's become a joke that her favorite color is purple... did you notice the color of her top? Enjoy your "original" pumpkin Judy, it's as much fun as you are.

I won't even get into it about this table.. lets just say, "What a Hoot". It was 12 hours of nothing but quick wit, laughter and fantastic friendships. Thanks for coming, Crazy Ladies - my sides hurt from laughing.

Friends I met when I attended the Bear Patch Retreat in White Bear Lake. I'm looking forward to seeing them again on Oct. 15th when Bear Patch has their fall "Sleep in your own bed" Retreat. Thanks for coming Ladies.

DMC has always been the floss I was familiar with. I think it's what my Grandmother used.

Recently one of our sales reps came in and was talking about "Sullivans" floss. It was Eqyptian cotton, which is known for its strength and ability to hold color. It was said to have passed tests 3 times better than DMC.. and the hype goes on.

I'm a visual person and often skeptical of claims to be "bigger and better" than a tried and true product.

So I decided to try it myself. I took home a skein of each, DMC Red and the Sullivans Red with the same number as the DMC. I placed both skeins in seperate glasses with very warm water and a little soap. You probably wouldn't use very warm water if you were washing your quilt, but how do you know at what temp. the floss may run.

I took a spoon and swished each skein a few times then looked at the water. The glass containing the DMC had very pink water in it. The other glass which contained the Sullivans, was still clear except for the soap. The bubbles on top were still white. OK, now I believe.

We ordered the full line. It arrived on Tuesday. 496 absolutely Yummy colors. Since I'm still in the novice stage when it comes to embroidery.... the possibilities I see ahead are endless.

New Wool's - New Fun

The new wools arrived today. I love to open the box and see all the fantastic colors and textures just waiting to be transformed into something fun. First thing I did, was to get out my Sizzix. I've had an idea in my head since I purchased the die for a poinsettia, but never found the right colors of wool.

I designed a wool ball pincushion a while ago, it's my favorite to make and I enjoy making a new one for each season.
Here are the three colors of wool I used. I love the shading, it gives petals a nice natural look. I already had the wool ball made - in anticipation of a new idea. It takes 7 petals and 2 leaves. Just a touch of floss to make the veins, a few french knots for the center and I always use a bit of glue to lightly attach the parts to the top. (I'm toying with the idea of beading the center -I'm a glitz girl).
This is a close up of the finished pincushion. I think it turned out really cute. Fun for the holidays. Would make a great gift for one of your quilting or sewing buddies. I'll be making up some kits. All the petals will be pre-cut for you, just make up the ball and you're ready to go.

Oh ya, we got in fall colors too. Now to come up with one using the leaves I just cut. I'm having so much fun. If you've never worked with wool, it's wonderful. We have our "Creative Ewe Club' starting October 13th, that's a perfect chance to learn how much fun it is to create with wool. Stop in the shop and see the wonderful sample Heide made up for our first class.

Last night was our first annual "Talent Show - Bed Turning"

First I want to thank all our wonderful customers and friends for sharing their fantastic quilts.

We had a full house... and it was fun.

Just a quick note - we had quilts still in progress, recently made quilts and quilts from the 1800's. There were pieced quilts, crazy quilts and applique quilts that took your breath away.

Lola was gracious enough to take these photos for you to see the wonderful show. So, grab a cup of coffee or tea and sit back and enjoy.

New restaurant in town

On the corner of the Rainbow Foods strip mall in Apple Valley, is a tiny store front. I can't tell you how many businesses have occupied the spot. To my recollection I remember the TCBY, then a fancy - pizza place that only used feta and other stinky cheeses on their pizza's - and charged $16 for a small. Now the space is occupied with "Burger Time".

It opened about 2 months ago. My description of it is... very small, seats approx 25. No fancy decor - just to the point. They sell only burgers, fries, onion rings and pop. That's it, like the name says "Burger Time".

Last night I decided to give them a try. I had to go to Petco, to get Quahog some food and they're right there, so why not. I like hamburgers but they have to be done a certain way.... burned to a crisp, no juice can come out.. no color other than brown- the darker the better.

I went in and was greeted immediately. The menu was easy enough to understand. Burgers from 1/3 lb to HUGE. They come with mayo, ketchup, lettuce, onion, pickle. A combo gives you a bucket of fries, big enough to share and a large pop. So I ordered mine - hold the mayo and onion. I was specific about the "doneness" and assured that it would be to my liking.

I found a seat and waited for them to call my number "261". When called I picked up my order and was really surprised at the size of the burger. Do you remember back in the early 70's when Burger King was the rage? Their burgers were Huge, fresh and delicious. That was before they started pre-cooking them and just microwaving them before slapping them on a bun.

Well.... Burger Time is the Burger King of Old. It had that off the grill flavor, done to perfection.
The fries were great, and there was alot of them. I'm not saying it was a gourmet burger by any means but it was a very good burger. This is a place you can take a family and not go broke. My meal cost me $6.20. I left feeling full and glad that I stopped.

I plan to go back again. I like a good "well done" burger and I felt it was a good value. Not being a food critic... that's my opinion.

September 1st and my month is off to a nice start. Enjoying a cup of freshly steeped Rhubarb and Vanilla tea from Denmark, my soon to be well worn copy of Quilt Sampler and the sounds of the neighborhood coming to life.

I could sit on this deck all day and just relax, it's one of my very favorite places. Has that cottage feel to it and just makes me feel content.

Hope everyone has a relaxing - content day as well.

Today, we met with one of our fabric reps. He showed us alot of different fabrics and we placed quite a few orders.

Of all the lines he showed us, I'm really excited about this one. Tussie Mussie by Jennifer Heynen.

Cute buttons, great patterns. Oh, the possibilities.

These buttons are porcelain and absolutely adorable. I have a purse pattern coming that will be sooooo cute with these.

The Great Minnesota Get Together

When I got up this morning I had no plans to go to the fair. It just happened.

I was told that I could get the bus at the MOA, go to the fair and come home anytime I wanted - the bus left every 15 minutes. That sounded good.

Before I knew it, I was parking at the MOA lot and getting on the bus. I haven't been on a bus since I was in school - lets just say it's been a while.

What a deal $5. to go and return, no hassle with parking. Perfect.

When I left the house, my intention was to go to the shop and hang class samples, work on a kit I'd started the day before and just get caught up. I did go to the shop, I started to hang the quilts but I hate heights. How the idea to go to the fair came into my head I will never know.

While on the bus my phone rang, it was Jeff asking where I was - he was asleep when I left for the shop.
When I told him I was going to the fair. He laughed and said I'd never find it (I'm not a homing pigeon) and the parking was impossible. My comment was - I'm going to the fair, I'll call you later. I waited a few minutes and then sent a picture of the inside of the bus to his phone. He called immediately, stunned that I really was going and especially that I was going alone. To be honest, so was I. (Jeff doesn't enjoy the fair or I would have gone with him.)

When I got to the fair I ran into one of our customers, Stacey Kahlert and her son Lucas. We walked together to the gate, she gave me her number in case I got lost or needed a ride home.

Once inside, I had two places I wanted to go. I love the baby animals and I had said I would see the Rosebud's Cottage booth in Heritage Square.

To start, I got myself a hand squeezed lemonade. Delicious. Then I was walking past the "All you can drink Milk" booth. I remember my first fair back in 1968, when we moved here. All you could drink was only 25 cents. Every thing's gone up these days. I didn't have any milk - not a good combo with the Lemonade. I did have a cotton candy and a big pretzel with mustard, two of my favorites. I saw the corn dogs - they have gone from the regular size I remember to 18" long. I thought about it, but knew I wouldn't eat even half of it.

I proceeded to Heritage Square, found Roseann's booth and chatted with her and her husband Bob for a few minutes and then it was off the see the baby animals.

The baby animals have always been a favorite of mine. Nothing cuter than a little tiny farm animal. (nothing smellier than the parents)

Laying in the middle of a pen all alone was this adorable baby goat. What a cute little fella and he kept making a little cry for his Mom. She was in another stall, so they went and got her. He was very glad to see her - feeding time.

Then to my favorite, the piglets. So soft and pink. This little one is only 2 days old. The girl holding it said that in 7 months it will weigh 400 lbs. The sad part was then she said that at that time it would be ready for the one way bus ride. I don't know how she could hold that cute little guy and think about bacon. That's one of the reasons I would never make it in 4H... the other reason being - I'm a city kid.

My last stop was the baby ducks. So fluffy and yellow. The girl was explaining to a group of children that when they grow up they'll be just like the one on the AFLAC commercial. I thought that was cute.

That was it, I was done. I'd seen what I wanted to, now to get Jeff a turkey leg and find the main gate.

My trip to the fair was fun, I may go back now that I know about the bus. I would like to see the quilts and a few more things, but will plan ahead and wear tennis shoes and a cooler top. I left the house in a sweatshirt and flip flops.... not the best for the fair.

Quilt Sewcial - 29 days away.

I'm sitting on my deck having coffee and working on my "Sewcialite" gifts. Did you realize our annual Fall "Quilt Sewcial" is on September 24th... that's only 29 days away.

I look forward to our "Sewcial" each time. We have a great group of ladies that have attended almost every one we've had. We've also been lucky enough to add new faces to each one as well.
I think the part that's the best is watching everyone make new friends, laugh and share their love of quilting with others with the same "addiction"

I have contacted Old Chicago and let them know that you have requested the menu be kept the same. I also reminded them that you wanted more Thai pizza on the buffet. If you have any other requests, please let me know and I will do what I can to see that it's done.

I don't think we will have "Stevie Wonderhands" doing his massages this time. His schedule didn't seem to work with our date. I will contact him to see if he can come, if not I think I have an alternative.

I will send out a reminder to everyone on our email list to get their reservations in ASAP. I need to get our total count. If you have a friend that you would like to have attend, let them know. I do have a few openings left. I don't want to go over 35 guests, that makes us feel crowded like a can of sardines.

I look forward to seeing everyone and sharing a day.

Learning to embroider... and havin' fun!!!

For the past 6 months, I've had this adorable book.
I just keep taking it out and looking at the cute dresses and trying to figure out what I want to make.

Since I'm in the middle of an applique Christmas BOM, starting another is not possible. BUT... what if I emboidered the little dresses?

I've wanted to learn to embroider for a while now. I watch the ladies once a month in our embroidery club do it and admire their wonderful projects. Becky and Sandy are unbelievable, their stitches are so even... perfection.

So, I traced one of the dresses on a plain background fabric, put the fleece on the back - found my hoop and started.

OK, so all I know how to do is the stem stitch, but that'll work.

The little sailor dress was the first I did. Not bad, my stitches were not exactly perfect but I think with practice and a few tips from Becky or Sandy and I could get better.

Since the dresses aren't appliqued there isn't a lot of color. So I decided that I would add rick rack, beads and any other tiny embellishments I could find.

It feels like designing clothing for kids.

This is my favorite so far. I love the scotty dog on the front.

I have several more done and now am trying to figure out what I will do with them. I was thinking of bordering each individual with a 30's print that coordinates with it, then sewing them all together. It may look nice... or too busy, we'll see when I get them all done.

Birthday Buddies 4th Golf Tournament

On Saturday, August 20th we held our 4th Annual Birthday Buddies Golf Tournament.

40+ golfers and friends came to Majestic Oaks in Ham Lake to golf for the cause.

It was a perfect day. We couldn't have asked for better weather, nice breeze and no humidity.

To start off the fun, we raffled two "Party Carts". The carts were stocked with Callaway Hats, Wilson golf towels, tees a sleeve of quality balls from Koepke Law Group and lots of snacks and beer.

How fun to ride around the course in glittery style!!

Tee off was at 12:30, off they went. That gave Nancy, Jess, Deanna, Joan and I time to relax before we had to set up the evening raffles and games. Majestic Oaks catered the wonderful banquet.

Here are a few photos of the golfers. I didn't post all of them - I had over 60 pictures.

I want to thank everyone who came and those who couldn't but sent a donation. A special thanks to Dave "Hooner" for his wonderful contribution. Not only for this event but for his monthly contributions throughout the year. We couldn't do, what we do with out the continued support.

Starting to think toward next year. Have to get the reservation in at the club by December.... will you be golfing? More details to come.

2011 Quilt Minnesota comes to an end.

Tomorrow is the final day of the 2011 Quilt Minnesota Statewide Shop Hop. Before I go any further, I want to say Thank You to all the participants that made this event, fun and were so appreciative of all the effort that was put into it.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time and got to see all the fantastic quilts and quilting related items available to them at all the shops. Isn't it fun to see how each shop has their own different flavor? I find it amazing how shops can carry the same fabrics but what each does with them makes them all unique. We're known as the Civil War and 1930's shop. We don't carry Asians or Batiks. So our main concentration lies in those areas. Many thanks for the comments on our samples. Alot of time is put into making and displaying quality quilts for you to enjoy.

Did you get to all the shops you had hoped to? What was your favorite thing about the Hop?
Was there something we - the shop owners- could do to improve your next years experience? These are questions that we ask ourselves after each hop. I would like to be able to take your comments to our finishing meeting and share them with our group and then on to Sue/Grubers for their last meeting. Your opinions do count and are important to all of us.

Please take a minute and send me an email so I can take it to the meeting and address it with the other shop owners.

Time to Register

Now that the Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop is winding down, it's time to think ahead to Fall and getting those last minute details taken care of for the events we have scheduled.

"Talent Show" Bed Turning

Everyone loves Show and Tell. This is your chance to share your work with others who share the same passion - Quilting and Quilts. We will have current quilts, quilts from the past and even some that are still in progress.

You don't have a quilt you'd like to show... then plan on coming and enjoying the wonderful works of your fellow quilters.

Clothesline Quilts - Table Cozees

Evonne Cook is a dear friend of mine. I met her at least 15 years ago when Barb and I use to do the Des Moines quilt show.

Evonne is the designer of "Clothesline Quilts". We carry many of her patterns in our Civil War section.

These new samples are from her "Table Cozees" patterns. She was kind enough to let us borrow her trunk show so that we could share them with you.

I really love the scalloped borders. Her patterns and instructions make it alot easier to do than it looks. I was just thinking.... it's time to start thinking about the Holidays. What a great gift idea.

I hope you'll have a chance to stop in and see them.

Day one is done.

Day one of Quilt Minnesota is done. I was up early and at the shop to double check everything.

* Passports stamped
* Charm Square
* Quilting Tip
* Pattern for block
* Pewter Charms ready

All the displays were OK with kits and patterns out.
Bathroom cleaned, and stocked.

Before I knew it, it is was time.... the first hopper arrived at 9:30. From then on it was just a happy blur. We would be packed with hoppers and then get a lull. Then you'd look up and in the door would come another wave of ladies laughing and having fun.

The bus arrived a bit late but was full of happy, fun quilters. We got them stamped, their fabrics cut, kits and other items rung up and bagged and got them back on the bus. From the comments that were made to us, they enjoyed the hop.

Tomorrow we will start all over... another fun filled day.

I want to say thank you for all the wonderful comments that were made about the shop. It's nice to know that were on the right track. As always, we appreciate your business and look forward to helping you again in the future.

Excited...it starts tomorrow

It's finally here.... Quilt Minnesota 2011 kicks off tomorrow morning!

Are you excited? Did you grab your quilting buddies and make plans to hop?

I've seen a few photo's of the projects that some of the shops have made from this years line of fabric. One word..... Creative. From Bed Size Quilts to throws, totes to table toppers, there's something for everyone. And that's just the start, we've all been working very hard to get in the latest lines of fabric, newest notions and make up some hard to resist projects.

I hope you all have a great time. Drive safely and be sure to say "Hi" when you're in the shop.

Vignette in Stitches Mystery Quilt

The wait is over. We finally received the issues of the Vignette magazine we ordered.
For those unfamiliar with Vignette, it's from Australia. It's got the best receipes, some embroidery.. like the one the ladies are doing shown here, and lots of other fun articles, pictures and more.

A few months ago, Linda P. was in picking out her fabrics for the pieced sections. She was choosing them from our "Daydreams" line. Her threads coordinate perfectly to the fabric. It's turning out so sweet, and fresh looking.
Next Sandy S. started making hers... and the list continues.

Embroidery Club met yesterday, Sandy S. was nice enough to let me take a couple photo's of her blocks. I wish I could get better close up's, the stitching is wonderful. I honestly envy the ladies that can do embroidery with such consistant stitch lengths and perfect curves.

So, if you would like to make this little mystery quilt, we have the first three issues in the shop. I must warn you - they are a bit spendy, but this project is well worth the extra cost.

Is this Wicked Awesome or what????

Well, here are the first three blocks of what I think is the most Wickedly Awesome Embroidery Block-of-the- month I've ever seen. It's called "Witches n Stitches Bootique" by "Oh my Bloomin' Threads."

Sandy D. is working on completing the handwork and then we'll pick out the fabrics for the pieced blocks. We've ordered some really cute ones.
We should be officially starting the BOM August 15th. More details to follow. Just had to share these with you. Good job Sandy!!!

The new "Chicklets" are done.

My apologies to the ladies that were in looking for more "Chicklets". It seems like they just evaporate off the shelves.

I spent the weekend folding and packing up LOTS of them. I hope this will hold you over for a while.

There's a box all tagged and tied up, ready to put out on Monday. These are just waiting for the tags and to be tied.

I owe a Thank You to a special friend, Julie Stewart. Julie owns "Keepsake Cottage Fabrics" in Bothell, Wa. She told me about the little packs at a retreat we were on together. Following her lead, I decided to make up a few.... a few has ended up being more like hundreds. Thank you, Julie for a nice little tip.

I'll finish these up and they'll be available on Monday.

Other Patti's Garden

I spent yesterday with Patti H... known to many as "Other Patti".We worked on the class schedule, finished up some loose ends for the upcoming Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop and then just relaxed.

I had to share these pictures of Pattis garden. Right now she's getting ready to go to Michigan to pack up her Mother and bring her back to move into her house.So, on top the things she does for the shop, she also has her long arm business and is re-vamping her entire home to accommodate her Mother and all her Mother's belongings.
When I was looking at her gardens,I loved the Shabby Chic, English Garden feeling I got. Patti said she hadn't had time to take care of them lately.Between the nasty weather, then the house re-do and trying to keep up on the customer quilting, the gardens had to take a back burner.I found them quite charming. She has a lot of little added touches that give each garden a special feel. The little bird house on the rusty milk can, the little iron chair sitting in the corner. So, there may be a few weeds... life is full of a few weeds.

This was so cute, just an added touch of color.

While I was taking the pictures a Monarch butterfly was floating in and out of the flowers. It's been years since I've seen one. That just added to the tranquil feel.

I hope you enjoyed seeing Pattis garden. I know I'll go back and spend a little more time there before summer ends. Maybe enjoy it with her Mom.

Almost ready for the Hop.

We have our "Quilt Minnesota" display all set up and ready for everyone to see.

The new line of fabric for this hop is really getting
a warm reception. We've been pre-selling it since we opened the boxes. Yesterday a customer on vacation from Connecticut was in, and pre ordered 10 yards. She's from here originally and loved the fabric.

Becky designed and made the quilt on the bed. Can't you just picture it on a bed in a cabin, it
gives you that Up North feeling. We do have a limited number of kits available for the quilt.

Here's a close up of the quilt blocks. I love the way Becky used the border stripe in the
quilt. She just randomly mixed it through so it says Minnesota throughout.

Theresa made up the Pillow case above the bed the apron and blue table runner.
Jamie made up the Red table runner. I think everyone of the samples displays
the fabrics well.

Only a few days left til the hop starts...

Fabric Town is pleased to have Jean Carlton, AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser at our shop doing quilt appraisals by appointment and answering your questions. Insurance, Fair Market and Donation appraisals are available for quilts or quilted textiles: vintage or newly made.

Many people think only vintage quilts need be appraised but consider the investment you have in your newly made quilts. Replacement values for new quilts often include the costs of labor as well as materials. Many quilt shows are now requiring appraisals by certified appraisers. When shipping your quilt to a show or sending it as a gift, you will want to insure it against loss or damage. Knowing the value of your quilts, new and vintage, and informing your insurance agent of this fact, can be a big help if claims for damage or loss are necessary.

Any quilt you value should be documented, photographed and appraised. The written appraisal fee is $45 per quilt. It takes approximately 30 minutes to examine and photograph your quilt. Appraisals are mailed within two weeks. Consultations are also available.

A week ago I posted this picture. I found it in an email that was sent to me. I had no idea what the name of the pattern was.

Today, a very thoughtful Customer, phoned the shop to leave me a message. She found the quilt and was calling to give me the name.

It turns out the name of the quilt is "July 4th".

Now I feel really stupid. When I saw the picture it said "4th of July" under it... I just thought that was when the person posted it. Duhhhhh

Thank you thoughtful person for the phone call. I really appreciated it. I will now have Becky get the pattern for me when she does her ordering.

Rumors can ruin a business

There is a rumor that is floating around about Fabric Town closing, or as it was stated... going under. I want to set the record straight. Fabric Town is NOT, closing, going under or anything of the sort.

We just re-negotiated our lease with our landlord and signed on for 3 more years.

People say that we are not getting in the amount of fabric that we use to. That's true, but think about it, what shop really is? This economy has taken a toll on every business and half the families in this country.

When our customers spend less, we have to buy less. In order for us to keep our doors open we have to be sensible about what we order and when we have it come in. Right now the Holiday fabric is coming in, that eats up a good portion of our budget. So when that happens other areas have to wait their turn. Next would be our Civil War section. We have quite a few bolts coming from Andover, Marcus and Blue Hill. Our 30's section just got 20 new bolts and we have ordered 30 more to arrive within the next few weeks. On top of all that, you add in the fact that we have 2 full orders of the Quilt Minnesota fabric in stock, waiting for the Hop to start.

There are reasons that we no longer carry certain lines or brands. For one, batiks are no longer at our shop. My reasoning behind that; when you have two shops within 5 miles of you -each carries a large selections of batik, why would I want to have the same thing? Moda is another one. This I won't go into, but look around, you'll notice that alot of shops are not carrying the Moda selections they use to. Several are no longer carrying Moda at all. I am still on the fence about Moda. To be honest - There's life without Moda.

We are currently working on fun things for our customers. A few examples would be our Quilt Sewcial, Talent Show Bed Turning, Classes with Celine Perkins of "Perkins Dry Goods", and Buttermilk Basin is coming with her fabulous wool trunk show and lecture. This is just to name a few

Patti H. is putting together our class schedule for fall ..... and we have alot more in the works.

I am asking a favor from you, if you hear these rumors, please squelch them. A rumor like this could ruin a business. We are NOT closing.

Quick Tips for Curved Piecing.

I was always afraid to attempt curves because I was sure I couldn't do it. This is very easy, it just takes a little patience.

The first thing you must do is to divide your arc and pieces in half. This is important to insure that you ease it in around the curve evenly. I fold each piece in half and finger press (or you can use your iron) the center to make a crease.

Here you can see the crease in the center of the arc.

Once you have that done, with right sides together, line up the crease and pin the pieces together. Put your pins on the smaller piece - in this case it's the black and white. You do this so you can put the larger piece on the bottom when you sew. This is so your feed dogs can help you evenly ease the fullness in.

I must admit, I'm a pin person. I use alot of pins and when doing curves, I feel you can't over pin. You have your pin in the center, now go to each end and line them up and pin them.
I know this feels awkward, like it's never going to fit - just wait, it will.

The curves are on the bias, so they have a lot of stretch to them. If you pull them slightly, you will see how the two fabrics arc together. Now you will start pinning between the pins you already put in. Pull to line up the fabics and evenly pin the sides together. Do this all the way from end to end.

Now it's time to sew, put the larger piece of fabric on the bottom.
I use a piece of mole skin because my foot is not accurate and it also gives me a ridge to run the curve along. I don't take my pins out when sewing ... just go slowly over them.

After you've sewn the arc together, remove the pins.
Now you're ready to press and see how well your curve turned out.

I like to spray my piece with either Best Press or Magic Sizing. This helps make a nice crisp seam. When you press, start from the side and press to the top. Your arc will just lay flat and the bias edge makes it curve smoothly.

Congratulations... you just did "Curved Piecing". I hope this was helpful.

"Little Quilts" by The Wooden Bear finished so you will be ready in time.
They are nicely displayed on a cute wire frame.

Lola is working on a few more "Scrappy Sacks".
These little bags contain all the pieces pre-cut to make the miniature quilt.
Perfect to go to retreats or as a gift.

I consider myself a traditional quilter. I still enjoy nine patch and log cabin more than any other pattern. The only time I stepped out of my box was to make my New York Beauty.

UPS just dropped off a box of new books... these two were among the new selection.

They are unbelievable. The quilts may have started out with traditional block patterns but they are anything but traditional.

The photography is fantastic. I'm not much for funky fabrics and wild patterns - this is an exception.

This Spring was really a strange one. Now that we're supposedly into Summer - it's just as strange.

I think there's more mushrooms in the lawn than blades of grass. When you walk on it, it's squishy. The poor farmers either can't get into their fields to plant or the plants are drowning from the rain and suffering from the lack of sun.

My lovely basket of Million Bells that the girls at the shop gave me was so beat up from the rain and wind, that it lost all it's flowers.

They always say that after the rain - a rainbow. Well my entire basket is covered with wonderful buds... I guess you could say, a million of them. It made it through the storms and is bigger and stronger. Sounds like the description of alot of women I know.

The sun is coming out and it's suppose to be a wonderful "Summer" day.

I hope you all have a Million Bells kind of day.

The 2011 Minnesota Quilters show came to a close at 4:00 today. It was a great show and we had fun. It's always nice to see quilters having a good time and getting excited about a new project.

Gingie was excited. She got to sit with Sue Poser from Gruber's and chat. Then she went over to the "Quilt Minnesota" Quiltapoloza booth to check out the new fabric for this years hop.
While she was there, she checked on the bus tour. 21 shops in 3 days for only $199.

That's a fantastic deal. Now she can complete two sections and qualify for the wonderful gifts they're offering.
